Bridge Communities 25th Anniversary

Dear Friends,

Twenty-five years ago when Bridge Communities opened our first apartment, we did it as a church, just like this one, and we did it using only volunteers with no social services or professional support staff. Today, with the help of your church, Bridge is assisting 100 families each and every day. As Bridge celebrates its 25th year milestone, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your dedication to helping homeless families. Bridge could not begin to do the work we do without you, and I hope you feel the same way about us. Bridge calls the churches we work with Program Partners, and it is indeed a partnership. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Mark Milligan

Co-founder, Bridge Communities

The Mentor Table

To understand the mystery of mentoring

Requires a process as complex, as insightful,

As understanding Keats.

Beauty is truth, truth beauty.

The process is simple. Just help someone.

It often happens at a

Kitchen table.

A simple place, a sacred space.

We remember the comfort of growing up

Around a kitchen table.

The table is life.

A shared security for

Friends, family, and sojourners

To stop and share, share their lives.

Here, we mentors and the families begin doing the hard work.

We spread out at the table.

We spread out our receipts and our records and we judge the hard numbers.

We spread out our bank statements.

We review phone bills and set goals. We budget.

But under all of the harsh paperwork

We meet someone’s soul.

We discover courage and resilience.

We encounter blessing.

Examine the goals more closely—

Your will find a family’s dreams.

The hope of the generations

Lies just beneath these scraps of paper.

Consider the hopes and dreams

Of a family.

They are the beauty and truth

Of the work done at the mentoring table.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Environmental Ministry

We are still collecting broken Christmas tree lights! We have partnered with Elgin Recycling to collect and recycle old Christmas string lights. Elgin Recycling will pay St. Elizabeth Seton for every pound of lights collected, so keep collecting! We’ve already filled one 4’ x 4‘ x 4‘ box and are trying to fill another. Place your old lights in the specially marked bin near the Environmental cart on the lower level of the church. We will be collecting through the middle of January.

Additionally, are still collecting ‘used’ Christmas and holiday cards for St. Jude’s Recycled Card Program. The children of St. Jude’s will use the old cards to create beautiful new cards, which they will sell to benefit St. Jude’s. Please remove the backs of the cards before placing them in the specially marked bin on the Environmental cart.

Will You Be Christ’s Hands? Raise Your Hand for the New Helping Hands Ministry!

The SES Christian Service Commission is in the process of reorganizing the Helping Hands Ministry and is searching for several people to help with the restructuring and someone to chair this ministry when complete. Helping Hands was once a very vibrant part of our parish and the services provided to those in need were always greatly appreciated. When the ministry is ready to serve, it should limit the scope of activities to those that can be performed within a minimum amount of time and without much effort such as picking up a prescription, shoveling a sidewalk for a senior, or helping with a household task. No commitment of regularly scheduled time would be required and the service minister would be allowed to select which task they would prefer from those being requested. This ministry is for anyone who has been looking for a way to help others once in a while on their own terms. If you are interested in being part of the reorganization committee or its chair, please call Elaine Bernabe at (630) 369-2768 for more information.

2012 Election Information

The laity is a powerful voice in our nation and state. Our role as bishops is to call your attention to the trends and the issues that we believe are impacting the moral dimension of our society. We hope you will find this series of bulletin inserts educational and will reflect on their content. We also hope they will be helpful to you in discerning not only how to vote, but also in encouraging you to become further involved in promoting the common good in our state of Illinois.

Election Letter from Bishop Daniel Conlon (10/2012)

Election 2012 from the Catholic Bishops of Illinos (CBI) #1

Over the next few weeks the Catholic Bishops of Illinois will be distributing four bulletin inserts to provide guidance and reflection points for Catholics exercising their right to vote in the upcoming 2012 election.

Election 2012 from the Catholic Bishops of Illinois (CBI) #2

A conscience formed by our Catholic faith is needed to bring our moral principles to the debate about issues and candidates. We feel compelled, here at the beginning, to clarify the definition of conscience, because some cite their conscience as a justification for immoral public policy positions or support for a candidate whose positions conflict with the common good.

Election 2012 from the Catholic Bishops of Illinois (CBI) #3

As followers of Jesus Christ, we understand the human person in light of the mystery of the Incarnation. HUMAN DIGNITY flows both from our origin (being created in the image and likeness of God) and from our ultimate destiny, which is communion with God. Legitimate concern for the material well-being of all must never eclipse our concern for their spiritual and moral well-being.

According to the USCCB, when voting, our focus should be on the common good, not our personal interest. Ask: How can this make the world a better place, not how will this improve my personal situation? By being well informed in the teachings of the Church and all the issues in an election, recognizing that all issues do not carry the same moral weight, as well as taking into account a candidate’s commitments, character, integrity and ability to influence a given issue, we will be able to reason and determine what positions will align best with Church teaching and serve the greater good.

Mandatory Eucharistic Minister Training

A MANDATORY re-training of all Eucharistic Ministers will take place in the Worship Space in November. Let’s begin this Year of Faith together with a renewed reverence and respect for the great gift of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist! [Read more...]
